My granddaughter asked why my Halloween jumper looked so sad. She had a point.
I don’t usually write about clothes. I’m 66 and I live in Swords.
Every year, when the Halloween decorations come out, so does the same old jumper. It used to have bright orange pumpkins and little white ghosts. These days, they’re nearly as grey as the jumper.
At the end of September, my granddaughter Clodagh came over to help me go through the Halloween box. Paper bats, little felt ghosts, the pumpkins that light up. The kitchen looked better already.
Clodagh looked at the table, then at me, and came out with it.
“Granny, why does your Halloween jumper look so sad?”
I laughed. Then I looked down at it properly. Bobbled, the cuffs stretched, the ghosts barely there. She had a point.

I’d been telling myself, “Sure, it’ll do,” for at least four Halloweens.
How it happens
You wear it for a few weeks in October, then it goes back in the box with the decorations.
Next autumn, out it comes again. A little more faded, but you hardly notice.
When you only take something out for a few weeks each year, it’s easy to keep telling yourself it’ll do for one more Halloween.
What I had wrong
I’d thought about the decorations, the sweets and what the grandchildren would be wearing. For myself, I’d just pulled out the same old jumper.
Clodagh’s comment made me realise I wanted something I’d actually look forward to putting on this Halloween.

Mine is the Autumn Faith Swirl
So I went looking. A few days later, I found it in the Halloween collection at John Dublin.
It’s a hoodie with a little ghost waving beside a glowing cross, in a swirl of autumn leaves.
I was putting little ghosts in the windows. This one looked like something I’d actually enjoy wearing while I did it.
I could picture myself wearing it with my usual jeans — getting things ready in the kitchen, answering the door to the grandchildren, and welcoming everyone on the 31st. So I ordered it that evening.
It has a proper hood and a big front pocket, which is where my phone and the Sellotape now live.
When Clodagh came back
It arrived the following week. Clodagh was due back on the Saturday to finish the window, so I answered the door in it.
She stopped on the step and looked at the ghost for a long moment.
“He’s waving at me,” she said. Then she walked past me and asked if there were biscuits.

I’ve been reaching for it ever since. Most mornings, I’ve got it on before I put the kettle on.
Three things I’ve noticed since
One. It goes with what I already wear.
My usual jeans, my black trousers, my good boots. I haven’t had to buy a single thing to go with it.
Two. Dressing for Halloween is fun again.
I hadn’t enjoyed putting the old jumper on for years. This one makes me smile when I catch myself in the hall mirror.
Three. It’s for the run-up and the night itself.
I’ve worn it hanging the bats in the window, doing the shopping and filling the sweet bags. And it’s ready for the 31st.
About the price
Before I ordered, I wasn’t sure about replacing a jumper that would still do. Then I thought about how much I enjoy getting ready for Halloween, and how little I’d been enjoying what I wore for it.

What I’d tell you over a cup of tea
If there’s a Halloween jumper you take out of the box every year, have a proper look at it this time. If it looks like mine did, you’ve probably been telling yourself “it’ll do” for a while too.
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. One thing you look forward to wearing, in a season you already love, is plenty.
The old jumper is still here, by the way. It’s been put in charge of washing the car.
Everyone’s coming over on the 31st. Clodagh’s going as a bat, and I already know what I’ll be wearing.
